The Durham Peewee Huskies ended their 08-09 season at the 60th annual tournament in Goderich.
Monday March 16 saw the locals on the ice at 10am playing the additional entry team from Stratford. The game was face paced, the play going back and forth with goaltending being center stage. Durham had several quality chances, however could not find any holes in Stratford's keeper, finding themselves down 1-0 after 2 periods. In the third the Huskies pressed for the tie and after missing a couple of golden opportunites, Stratford struck again. Unfazed, the Huskies continued to push for offence, unfortunatley that allowed Stratford to expand their lead and eventually complete the win 4-0. The loss put Durham on the consolation side where they met Kincardine's additional entry squad in game 2 at 3pm. The game against Kincardine started quickly and the locals where rewarded with the opening goal when Nate Duguay slammed in a pass from Colton Cook.
Kincardine replied twice before the end of the period and then added 2 more in the second for a commanding 4-1 lead at the break. Regrouped Durham hit the ice in the final period and took command of the play, giving up only 2 shots against, storming the Kincardine net but not seeing any rewards on the scoresheet. With an empty net marker the final score of 5-1 saw Kincardine advance to the final, eliminating Durham from further play, ending their season.
The season wrap-up day was Sunday the 22nd with a spirited match against the parents and a pot-luck party afterwards. The team members, parents and players alike would like to take the time to Thank all the people who made this season possible with the behind the scenes work, such as fund raising, gate collectors, reffing assignment and ice scheduling to mention a few. A great big Thank You goes to our team Sponsors, Durham Royal Bank and the Saugeen Community Credit Union, without your support it would be harder for us to play hockey. The awards banquet will be in April, when a few deserving individuals will be honoured by their teammates, however, this group of young men all deserved to be recognized as a quality group of embassadors for Durham Minor Hockey as they displayed great sportsmanship at all times, on and off the ice. On behalf of the coaching staff, I wish to Thank all the parents and players for thier efforts at making this an enjoyable season and we wish everyone all the best in their future endeavors.
